“One hundred words to tell a story about a picture. “Easy!” you say. Click the link below and try it yourself. Thank you for the weekly challenge Rochelle!”
I wrote this story in answer to the following prompts:
Friday Fictioneers – Write a 100-word story based on the Photo Prompt image by David Stewart
Mystery Eggs
The eggs arrived on the icerink Wednesday. They’d brightened every day.
“Eight feet by five feet – no known creature could lay these,” proclaimed scientists.
Large crowds gathered by Sunday night. They knew what they were. “Dragons! Dragons! Dragons!” they chanted.
From the top of the Ferris wheel, I looked upon the sea of ultraviolet-blue and pink eggs. Smiling I pressed a button. “Not dragons!”
The eggs burst open in an explosion of sparks. Energising percussion music rumbled into the watcher’s chests. Before them dancers erupted from the yolks with majestic cartwheels, somersaults and backflips – it was party time!
The End
Thanks for reading my friends.
There’s more in the Poetry Corner, Poetry Nook, Short Stories. and Short Stories 2 and Short Stories 3 tabs.

Dear Mason,
That must’ve been an amazing and glorious spectacle. I wonder if those performers waiting in the eggs weren’t a bit cramped. Imaginative story.

Hello,, Rochelle.
It was until I realised I was 115 words over lol. Agreed three days in an egg must have been torturous!
Thanks for reading!

Isn’t amazing how many words can be trimmed away without losing the story?

These small word counts are amazing for honing your writing.
I felt I lost a lot in the dancing but the story still did what I intended.

That’s why I love this exercise so much. It revolutionized my writing. We writers tend to say more that we need. And in my case, I repeated way too much.

Yes it seems we do. One of the reasons I gave up on publishing was editors always wanting to delete half my stories. Now I just enjoy short story writing and this one is particularly fun.

I hope it was celebrated the last case of Covid on the globe. Otherwise it has to be a huge marketing scheme.

That would be an amazing way to start a party. I hope they had food and water and a bathroom in those eggs. I can picture an alternate version where the eggs burst and corpses flop out.
