“I always have places in my garden for the wildlife. Today’s image reminded me of that.”
I wrote this story in answer to the following prompt:
Friday Fictioneers – Write a 100-word piece based on the Photo Prompt image above by © Dale Rogerson
FOWC with Fandango — Ungainly
Ragtag Daily Prompt — Customary
A Wild Donation
The customary if ungainly woodpile was stacked ready.
Snow was forecast in three days. This would be a cold winter.
Fern pushed a last handful of straw between logs and stepped indoors.
She turned on the central heating and sat by the window with a mug of coffee.
Mr toad slipped behind the logs within an hour.
As dusk neared; the hedgehogs came.
The spiky creatures always did.
Fern counted nine hedgehogs who would overwinter in her log hotel this year.
Smiling, she felt good about donating her garden and warm wall to keep the wildlife safe.
The End
Thanks for reading my friends.

It’s a great idea to build a hotel for animals 🙂

I have always yearned to host a hedgehog. I’ve never been lucky enough but I’ll keep on yearning.

I hope you do soon. If you have lots of hedges nearby a little cat food will entice them to you.

I tried that. I got rats. 😦 Still working my way through that problem.

That’s a shame, don’t want rats. The only other option would be to build hesdgehog houses beneath hedges and see if they’ll nest in those.

They are, as humans continue to annihilating everything natural from their surroundings sadly.

It is such a nice thing. We have a lot of hedgehogs around here that stay in the garden over winter.
Thanks, Dave.

I wonder if there are any predators who will hide in that woodpile 🙂

Hello, Linda.
You’d potentially get stoats and rats, even an adder if you are close to the water.

I once built a shelter for feral cats for winter in my backyard in New England.

That was nice of you. Do you help with the TNR program. Trap, Neuter, Release – I’ve done a lot of that over the years to help bring numbers down.

I once living in a 120 year old house and we had mice in the attic. I set non-lethal (“humane”) traps in the attic and then released the mice they trapped into a field miles from my home. But never was able to actually catch a feral cat. They used my shelter, but I wasn’t fast enough to trap them.

You’re a good person, Fandango. Most kill mice without a second thought.
You need proper cat cage traps to catch ferals, they’re far to wily and lightning fast.

Love she’s using the logs as insulation for the house rather than burning them and thus the animals have somewhere to hibernate. Good stuff.

Thank you.
I agree log burning is something that needs to be banned. We no longer have enough trees to simply keep hacking them down and burning them.

Pretty nice pastime that makes for Fern. Better than counting chickens that haven’t hatched. 😀
