“I’ve never been so big on scifi. This is as sciency as it gets – well most of the time anyway.”
I wrote this story in answer to the following prompt:
Friday Fictioneers – Write a 100-word piece based on the Photo Prompt image above by © Douglas M. MacIlroy
A Scientific Experiment
They work within a sea of metal
Scientists testing worldly theories
While fabricators hammer and fettle
See the test tubes aligned in series
The machine begins to whir
A terrifying hum sets the air a shimmer
A ball of colours spins and blurs
Hope rises from the photonic glimmer
So, begins the energy transmission
The device screams with intensity
Scientists witness nuclear fission
They applaud the magnetic density
Shocking sparks begin to fly
An explosion leaves them floored
Heads shake; what happened and why
Oh well, back to the drawing board
Thanks for reading my friends.

I work for a metal fabrication company and that is spot on Mason. Love it. The rhyming, the flow and the great climax. Brilliant 😊

Hi, Pam.
That’s fun. What do you fabricate?
I’m glad I did the profession justice with my little rhyme.

That’s amazing. What a rewarding thing to do. Knowing you’re providing a setting for children to learn must feel wonderful.

Dear Mason,
We celebrate the successes but forget the blood, sweat and tears that go into the initial attempts, don’t we? Nicely done in poetic form.

That’s science in a nutshell. Research, hard work, failure, reconsider, debate, hard work … A great read.

My fear is that the result of the failed experiments might cost us more than we hope to gain. Very lyrical.

Nice narrative, Mason. We forget that success is most often preceded by much failure. Well told.

Really good job of rhyming some difficult words. The story certainly ends with–well, a BANG 🙂

Awesome poem.. do you always write poetry for FF? I have started out with a story before and it kind of morphs into a poem. 🙂

Hi, Courtney,
Thank you. I think I’ve done two as poetry for FF. For other prompts I often try a poem. I have two whole pages worth of poems on my site. I did a whole short story of several pages poetically once too. It’s nice to try diffeent ways of writing isn’t it.

Push yourself up and give it another go. Or else hire a great public relations agent who can put the spin on anything. 😀

I love this, because as opposed to sci fi, it feels like sci reality. The real drama of real experimentation. Well told.
