“Our greatest discoveries often come by complete accident.”
I wrote this story in answer to the following prompt:
Friday Fictioneers – Write a 100-word story based on the Photo Prompt image above by PHOTO PROMPT© Jen Pendergast
Icy Discovery
“There!” yelled Professor Mansfield.
“At last!” replied technician Malcolm staring at two circles revolving in the iced-over lake. “The AUV’s are surfacing!”
Within minutes the circling ice vanished like manholes opening. Two yellow scuba tank-like objects bobbed in the frozen water.
Mansfield and Malcolm retrieved them. They were worth millions due to their 3D scanning sonar devices.
“Now, for the payoff,” Mansfield said rubbing his painfully cold hands.
“Yes, I feel rich already!”
With the AUVs connected to the computer, they played back the captured footage revealing a disc-shaped object.
Malcolm gasped, “That’s not a U-boat – that’s a UFO!”
The End
Thanks for reading my friends.

A not so successful UFO by the sound of it. You tend to think of them as invincible.

Indeed, but we do have a fair amount of crash stories too. Roswell, to name a big one. It’s a fascinating subject for sure,
Thanks for reading.

With so many electronic recording devices everywhere these days, I’m sure a lot more of the “hidden” will be revealed. Good sci-fi writing, Reena.

Oops! I mean, Mason! Sorry.

For sure they will. They just found a giant pyramid in the pacific.
I must apologise, Reena. I’ve been calling you Jade based on your profile name.
Thankyou for reading.

Wow on the pyramid, will have to google that one. I honestly made a mistake by calling you Reena (her story was just after yours and I was thinking it was hers) and Jade is my name on the profile and fine to use.

Ahh, I see, No worries! It’s easy to get confsed when reading so many blogs. Jade it is then!
Yeah the pyramid is a cool one. I’m excited to see if they’ll launch an expedition to check it out.

I read this as being a UFO introducing life to earth.

Depends if the men in black make them disappear or not I guess.

Oh, brilliant. Are they sure the UFO is inactive? The Aliens could just be hiding there. 🙂

For sure, no better place than beneath the ice to hide!
Thanks for reading.

And now they’ll be able to identify it. What acronym will they use then – IFO?

Entertaining take on the prompt. Finding a UFO rather than Nazi gold must have been a bit of a downer!

Yeah, not what they wanted and potentially dangerous too.

Good suspense there–and a nice surprise at the end. Either the UFO malfunctioned or the alien pilot goofed 🙂

Hmm who knows what’s hiding in that UFO.

The aliens were clearly looking for the only sign of intelligent life on the planet, dolphins.

Ooooooo fabulous discovery. Great descriptions of the cold temperature. I wonder how they’ll make money off this find? Tourists or the government
