My Arcane Ability

“Writers, do you ever feel as if your characters are in control? Do they tell the story and you just put the words on the page? That certainly happens to me. My poor forgotten sleuth was the strongest. You know I created her character profile before I started writing. By the time I finished the first book, she’d taken over and changed herself. I never realised until I read back; she’d changed her hair and eye colours completely. She’d done so without causing me so much as a thought that it was different. Now, if that’s not magic I don’t know what it.”

I wrote this poem in answer to the following prompts:

My Arcane Ability

I am a writer by precept
Ordained by every concept
My characters tell the story
I write it – its mandatory

Non-writers do not realise
The power characters utilize
Yes, I have the imagination
But I’m a tool for their creation

Register me Insane
But writing is surely arcane
With ever word, it holds you tighter
That magic is why I am a writer
