“Many people hear a dog bark and panic. They miss the high-pitched note as a friendly excited greeting. The wagging tail, the tongue hanging out, the soft body as signs the dog is friendly. It’s deep bark with the growling notes, the rolled lips, tense, quivering body and pulled back ears you need to watch for. Learn to speak dog, it could save your life.”
I wrote this poem in answer to the following prompts:

Dog to English
Absolutely nothing is as scary
As hearing a big dog bark
Whether it be toothy or hairy
Or slinking about after dark
Science says dogs make ten sounds
Howling and barking, snarling and growling
A dog’s communication knows no bounds
Listen to him; save a lot of scowling
What did your dog just say?
‘I’m hungry’, ‘I want walkies’, ‘warning!’
Each vocalisation has meaning, okay.
Learn them, this very morning
Gird yourself and take the lead
It’s walkies time, you’ve been bestowed
This dogs’ strong and now he’s pee’d
He’ll drag you down the road!
Thanks for reading my friends.

Have a great day!
An immensely important message here! I’m constantly translating “dog speak” for the canine impaired. I have run a day care for 42 years and have also owned dogs forever. I teach/taught all my kids Dog 101. You’re correct. That knowledge can save lives… both human and canine. Wonderful post!

Thank you for looking after dogs so well for your whole life. I’ve found most bites come because people don’t listen to the clear messages the dogs give us. So often I see a scared dog saying ‘leave me alone’ and people still force themselves on it and wonder why it snaps.
Thank you so much for reading and I’m glad you liked it.

My dog experiences also educated me well on dealing with small children. There’s a direct correlation. 😉 You’re most welcome.

Makes sense they both beed rules, boundaries, and discipline. Half the time neither sit when you tell them too either lol

HA! We could go all day on this. Intermittent toileting accidents, resistance to sharing, and responding well to positive reinforcement… need I say more? Having a wonderful day fellow dog lover!

Lucy, I’m very happy to meet you! I had a black dog with a scary bark who actually loved everyone except large dark men who came at him too fast. He’d been kicked around and worse as a puppy. His behavior “said” a lot about that. ❤

Aww poor thing! Why people have to be cruel to animals is beyond me. I’d say he had every right to have a go a people who reminded him of those dark days.

Yep, but it wouldn’t have gone well for him. 😦 He was a wonderful and complicated dog and I’m grateful for the 12 years I got to spend with him.

Thats the worst of it. People can hurt dogs and get a slap on the wrist for it. Dogs defend themselves and get euthanised for it. So unfair.
12 years is great for a dog. I’m so pleased you had him for so long.

I had a neighbor who taunted Dusty and finally called Animal Control on me. The AC officer came out, met my dogs, saw how they were cared for and said, “There’s something wrong with your neighbor. I’ll talk to him.” 😀

What a scumbag calling Animal Control on you! I’m so pleased the officer saw through the lies and backed you up. Some people live purely to make others lives a misery don’t they.

Yep. Surprisingly, there are people like that. I will never understand why.

There is no fun in making lives miserable you only make yourself miserable in the process. It only makes sense when a person is drawn to do it through some form of insanity or jealousy I think.
